Why a Supports Plays a vital role in 3D printing?

3D printing is incomplete without a support. If there is no support, it creates a strings, no matter if your print is 3 hours or 20 hours. If there is no support, the model become trash, not trash but will cause an improper finishing. Support material acts like temporary scaffolding for your print. Because 3D printers build objects layer-by-layer from the bottom up, they cannot deposit melted plastic into thin air.

Lets understand the types of supports

There are 2 type of supports in 3D printing - Solid/Normal and Tree.

There are 3 Different types of Styles in Solid/Normal Supports - Default, Grid and Snug

For Tree there are 5 different styles - Default, Slim, Hybrid, Organic, Strong

Solid Supports will create a simple pillar and wall like structure, while Tree makes a Tree Branches like structure

Now, Let me tell you why a Support plays a vital role in 3D printing. 

  1. Defying Gravity
    If a model has parts that overhang or stick out at an angle steeper than 45 degrees, the printer will try to extrude plastic over empty space, leading to drooping, sagging, or total print failure. Supports give these layers a solid foundation to rest on.
  2. Enabling Bridges and Hollow Structure
    If your design features a "bridge" (a horizontal span between two pillars) or an intricate hollow interior, supports hold up the ceiling until the bridging layers can connect and solidify.

  3. Preventing Warping and Detachment
    For top-heavy models or prints with a very small surface area touching the build plate, supports add extra stability. They anchor the model down, preventing it from wobbling or being knocked over by the print head.

While removing supports, they might break from that small hole parts and difficult to take out from it, after all they provided you the best results out of bed.

After removing supports, they leave marks, such as small support parts sticked to model, broken supports at hidden complex spaces, which makes the model incomplete.

You have to remove the marks by using purge cutter remover first where the small broken support has left then Sanding to remove the discrepancies and afterwards to create a smooth surface.
